BTS puts a period to the youth duology! Mini-album 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2'
A moment of youth that burns passionately, yet is nothing more than a mere dream once it passes
A sprint toward a single ray of light that cannot be stopped, ‘RUN’
BTS is releasing their fourth mini-album, 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2'. Having shown a significantly matured side through the mini-album 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1' released in April, BTS received passionate cheers from youth around the world. 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2', to be released on November 30, is the album that completes the youth duology, delivering the brilliant energy of youth to music fans of their own age who are living through 'the most beautiful moment of their lives' just as they are. [The Energy of Youth]
Seven young men standing on the threshold of their twenties. Having just entered their youth, BTS sang about the precarious nature of youth due to an uncertain future in their previous work, 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1'. In 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2', presented anew seven months later, BTS sings of a youth that sprints with all its might, embracing even the anxiety and precariousness shown in the previous work. Now gradually learning the bitter taste of life, they fully realize that life is not simply beautiful. Nevertheless, they simply run forward. All they possess are two poor legs and a passionate heart. There is nothing they can do other than run. In the midst of this helpless youth, they clash, break, and become covered in wounds as they shout: it's okay to fall, it's okay to get hurt. That is why this moment is beautiful. Following the previous album, members RM, Suga, j-hope, V, and Jungkook once again have their names on the producing and songwriting credits, demonstrating further musical growth. The lyrics have deepened, and the songs have become more passionate. While the youth duology comes to a close with 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2', they have only just stood at the starting line. Never Mind, BTS's sprint begins now. [BTS, Between Dream and Reality]
In 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1', BTS captured a slice of precarious youth against a backdrop of cherry blossoms in full bloom. And in 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2', they once again left the stifling studio to capture another side of youth: the sprinting spirit of the young. The members' gazes, as they wander through the shabby back alleys of Incheon, atop precarious container boxes, and along railroad tracks, are both pure and rebellious. The image of BTS, capturing the energy of youth that does not compromise with reality, is no different from that of their peers, creating a stronger sense of empathy. On the other hand, the photos taken in Jeju are filled with an unrealistic happiness, like a fairy tale. Colorful outfits, props like soap bubbles, the vast ocean, and green fields emphasize the image of a paradise that seems to exist only in dreams. In particular, the 'butterfly' appearing throughout serves as an important medium moving between reality and dreams, intertwining with Zhuangzi's 'Butterfly Dream' to provide a dreamlike feeling where one cannot tell what is a dream and what is reality. [Introduction to the Title Track RUN]
‘RUN’, the title track of the fourth mini-album 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2' and the song that signals the end of the youth duology, is a light hip-hop dance track infused with Brit-rock sensibilities. It begins quietly with an electric guitar sound that evokes a faint nostalgia, gradually emitting powerful energy toward the latter half. In BTS's song, where they fiercely crave love, saying 'Anyway, this is all I can do, I can do nothing but love you' even while being pushed aside and colliding, the image of a youth that knows no surrender is overlapped. The recklessness of running toward the end despite being torn and suffering is beautiful only because it is happening now.
While one could never say they are simply happy, it is a period of youth that is piteously beautiful, like a wild flower blooming amidst barrenness. This is precisely what BTS refers to as "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life." [Song Introductions]
1. INTRO : Never Mind
An intro track that signals the beginning of 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2,' it embodies the central worldview of the album. Following the intro of 'pt.1,' Suga took the lead once again. While the previous intro expressed the confusion and worries experienced by boys, this intro urges them to push forward even more, stating that failure and frustration are nothing to youth. As an intense hip-hop track mixed with rock elements, the hook from the rapper line, shouting "If it looks like you'll collide, step on it harder" and "NEVER MIND," evokes a strong thrill. Furthermore, the use of actual live sounds from a BTS concert makes the listener feel as if they are in the middle of the venue.
02. RUN
The title track 'RUN' is a song featuring an impressive electric guitar line that evokes an Oriental feel, continuing the lingering sadness and intensity shown in 'I NEED U,' the title track of 'pt.1.' With lyrics that comfort oneself, saying "It's okay to fall" and "It's okay to get hurt," combined with strong rock elements, it was born as a song that is both lyrical and full of energy. As the track that most intensively expresses the concept of 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2,' RM, Suga, V, and Jungkook are all listed in the composition credits, showing a musically more mature side.
03. Butterfly
A new song that received an explosive response even before its release after being featured in the 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life on stage : prologue' video, leading to some misconceptions(?) that it was the album's title track. It is a song that digests the future R&B and chillstep elements attempted in 'I NEED U' in BTS's own way; the delicate emotional expression of the vocal line unfolding under a trendy sound and the calm playing of a nylon guitar is charming. In particular, RM's rapping, which bursts out intensely at the ending, can be called a masterpiece. A song that contains the confused emotions of youth, it paints an image of wandering through a dream that one wants to believe is reality. Containing a more mature sensibility compared to the music BTS has presented so far, it raises expectations for what kind of music BTS will bring in the future.
04. Whalien 52
Here is the 'loneliest whale in the world.' The so-called '52-hertz whale.' This whale, which sings at a high frequency of 52Hz, cannot share any stories with other typical whales that communicate at frequencies of 12 to 25Hz. Nevertheless, the 52-hertz whale continues to sing. Lonelily and steadily. A portmanteau of 'Whale' and 'Alien,' this song embodies the feelings of BTS—a lonely and difficult song like that of the 52-hertz whale, yet a song they have no choice but to keep singing. Combined with high-pitch vocal sampling techniques that evoke the hip-hop vibe of the early 2000s and old-school rhythm sources, it was born as a song that creates a lonely and lingering emotion.
05. Ma City
An upbeat alternative hip-hop song that continues the funky vibe of 'Dope,' a track from 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1.' Following 'Paldogangsan,' where they sang about their hometowns using dialect rap, this is another song praising their hometowns. It contains affection for the cities where the members were born and raised—such as Ilsan (RM), Daegu (Suga), Busan (Jimin), and Gwangju (j-hope)—along with an awareness of the traces of reality they have walked through until now.
You can enjoy the excitement of BTS, who boast the brilliant wit and "beagle-like" energy of the trendsetting K-POP group leading the Hallyu wave.
06. Dope (뱁새)
A trap genre song with an impressive Oriental bell pluck line, it possesses a trendy and exciting beat that brings to mind "Dope," the follow-up track to 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1'. While it may seem like a purely joyful party tune, the lyrics contain a message about recent social trends, embodying BTS's philosophy of telling the stories of their own generation. The listening experience is enhanced by tasty rhyming, such as "They call me 뱁새, 욕봤지 이 세대, 황새 덕에 내 가랑인 탱탱," and it humorously pokes fun at the most pressing social issues of today, such as social polarization and the "spoon class theory," using BTS's own unique language.
07. SKIT : One night in a strange city
This track contains the reflections of the BTS members after successfully completing their activities for 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1'. It records the conversations they shared while gathered in a hotel on the final day of their South American tour last summer, a time when they were preoccupied with preparing the 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2' album while simultaneously conducting the 11-month-long world tour '2015 BTS LIVE TRILOGY EPISODE II. THE RED BULLET'.
08. Autumn Leaves (고엽)
A Future R&B song that creates an Oriental atmosphere. 'Autumn Leaves', which compares a precarious love to falling autumn leaves, is a song that exists on the same narrative line as 'I NEED U'. Like the songs Suga has produced so far, such as 'Let me know' and 'Tomorrow', it shares a context of delicate emotion, allowing listeners to confirm the true colors of producer Suga, who is growing musically.
09. OUTRO : House Of Cards
This song was also a new track previously revealed through the 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life on stage : prologue' video, creating a meaningful atmosphere as it appeared at the end of the video. It is the most restrained yet emotionally deep Alternative R&B song among the OUTROs presented so far, highlighting the vocal line including Jimin and V. It is a song about a precarious love that has continued from 'Danger' to 'I NEED U' and into this album, expressing a precarious relationship that feels as if it could collapse at any moment by comparing it to a house made of cards. The use of an actual orchestra recording provides a grand feeling, and the performance—which becomes increasingly ornate toward the end—along with the sorrowful emotions of the vocal line are delicately expressed, keeping the listener captivated until the very end.
