After proving himself as a 'complete soloist' through two digital singles released for the first time in 18 years since his debut—one in the midwinter of January to start 2022, and another in early summer in May—Kim Yong-jun has returned with his first mini-album filled with ballads that smell of fallen leaves.
As the hot summer fades and autumn arrives with a cool breeze, the weather, atmosphere, and music of that day 'suddenly' come to mind.
[Suddenly] is a ballad album by emotional balladeer Kim Yong-jun, dedicated to all the youth who scroll through their playlists as memories of a past lover resurface.
The overall theme of this album is 'Parting,' a word that makes the heart ache.
Including the title track 'How Do I Forget You,' which defines the album's identity, it features a total of six ballads, including his first digital single 'I Wish You Weren't So Pretty,' and his second digital single 'Back Then, We Were,' both of which sang about the flip side of love, such as unattainable unrequited love and the aftermath of a heartbreaking breakup.
The title track 'How Do I Forget You' is a song that composer Cho Young-soo, the 'Midas touch of the music industry,' put special effort into following the first digital single 'I Wish You Weren't So Pretty.' It is characterized by a melody line that is easy to sing along to, capturing the retro sensibility of the early 2000s that evokes nostalgia in listeners. The beautiful string melodies and warm electric piano (EP) sounds blend harmoniously to further highlight Kim Yong-jun's beautiful voice.
Furthermore, Kim Yong-jun, who participated in the lyrics again following 'Back Then, We Were,' and singer Kassy, a digital chart powerhouse with hits like 'Those Were the Days' and 'You Who Left on an Autumn Night,' are credited as co-lyricists alongside Cho Young-soo. The direct and desperate lyrics, which vividly convey the regret after a breakup, are layered over the melody, creating a sense of catharsis as if telling a story long kept in the heart.
In addition, the star-studded songwriting team participating in this first mini-album is also a topic of interest, from 'Heart-Racing Person,' written and composed solely by composer Ahn Young-min—who has created numerous hits since the SG Wannabe days—to 'A Familiar Neighborhood,' written solely by singer Maybee as a lyricist after a long time. Finally, the track 'A Slight Difference,' which depicts the shift in emotion from love to parting through a 'slight difference' in syllables, appears as the fourth track, completing this masterpiece of an album.
Now in his 19th year, this first mini-album bears Kim Yong-jun's touch from the first track to the last, having been sung countless times, prepared with great care over a long period, and revised again and again for more honest and sincere music.
