Five girls, brought together as if by fate, stood at a new starting line and took on the name ARTMS. Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Choerry reactivated ODD EYE CIRCLE, successfully completing North American and European tours alongside the release of a new album, while Heejin's solo album was sufficient to showcase the beauty of Korea. Additionally, Haseul demonstrated her growth as a performance-oriented idol by successfully completing a four-day solo concert in Seoul. Having completed this warm-up, ARTMS finally released their first full-length album, capturing the paradox of blessings and cruelty regarding love and life.
The intro track ‘url’ is like a ritual leading toward the title track ‘Virtual Angel.’ Just like a url that we must encounter to move anywhere on the internet. Starting with Kim Lip's narration, the exhilaratingly pouring rhythm encapsulates the dynamics of the album.
For the title track ‘Virtual Angel,’ EL CAPITXN and Vendors—who created ‘Generation’ and ‘Girls Never Die’ for Modhaus' junior group tripleS—joined forces for ARTMS. Based on a Y2K-style Euro-dance, they built a sacred vibe that could resonate in a cathedral, completing a dance song with a fresh feeling never heard before.
Now that the development of AI and the existence of the Virtual have become a reality, this song asks whether the existence of "idols," which we have been consuming through TVs and phones, was actually Virtual all along. While the love and romantic feelings toward an idol might not be seen as an actual relationship from the perspective of others, wasn't that emotion purely love between the idol and the fan? ARTMS sings that the emotions arising beyond the screen can be real, not virtual.
digipedi, who had been involved in building the universe since the days of LOONA, directed the music video, capturing the story of ARTMS and their fans in the visuals.
‘Sparkle’ expresses the sparkling sparks of emotion through music. Just as people say sparks fly when describing love, how many fireworks will unfold in our love? The fluttering excitement is engraved through the voices of the ARTMS members.
‘The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Milky Way’ was a song saved as a title track to the point that it was tentatively scheduled as the title for ARTMS' next album. However, it was included in this album without hesitation to ensure the completeness of ARTMS' first full-length debut album. It is a song gifted to the members by producer G-high, who created LOONA's representative song ‘Butterfly,’ and as such, it contains a beat that can be loved by both existing and new fans.
The pre-release tracks from ‘Flower Rhythm’ to ‘Candy Crush’ and ‘Air’ were all completed by sampling Heejin's solo songs ‘Bloom’ and ‘Algorithm,’ Haseul's solo ‘Plastic Candy,’ and ODD EYE CIRCLE's ‘Air Force One.’ This signals that their individual paths have converged to complete the single team, ARTMS.
‘Unf/Air,’ following ‘Air,’ sings about the asymmetry of the emotion called love. Why don't you look at me when I love you? This unfairness is captured through a calm and cute expression.
‘Distress’ unfortunately took second place in the ARTMS pre-release vote, but it was a high-quality song, to the point that it was the first track recorded during album preparations. The moment they monitored it in the recording studio, this song already defined the style of ARTMS.
‘Butterfly Effect’ tells the story of how the flapping of the wings of LOONA's ‘Butterfly’ became ARTMS. Inheriting the unique musical style and legacy of LOONA—to the point where the genre itself could be called ‘Butterfly’—it has flown in with wings as ARTMS.
The final track, ‘Birth,’ took first place with overwhelming support from fans during the ARTMS pre-release Gravity. And that ‘birth’ proves the existence of ARTMS. The already released music video captures the aesthetics of ARTMS to the extent that it is evaluated as one of the most cruel and beautiful videos in K-POP history.
With the schedule for the world tour ‘Moonshot’ revealed even before the album release, announcing a grand journey, the future of ARTMS begins here and now.
