Mouth & Pipe Organ 風, 琴 (Wind, Instrument) Wind & Reed Saehwang Kim Hyo-young X Organ Shin Dong-il Since both the saehwang and the organ are instruments that produce sound using wind, the title ‘風, 琴’ (Wind, Instrument) was chosen to reflect that meaning. ‘風, 琴’ is an album featuring diverse variations of creative works by Korean composers, the traditional folk song "Saeya Saeya," and the children's song "Island Baby," performed by Korea's representative saehwang player Kim Hyo-young and world-renowned organist Shin Dong-il. It conveys the harmonious tones and nostalgia of two instruments that are similar yet different, both having shared long histories in the East and West. The recording of this album involved CEO Hwang Byeong-jun of Sound Mirror and took place at the Incheon Elim Art Center, where the organ is installed, capturing the perfect harmony between the saehwang and organ as well as the acoustic sense of space. Following the album's release, a promotional performance will be held at the same venue on January 7, 2022. Furthermore, a saehwang and organ duo tour of Taiwan is scheduled for May 6 and 8, 2022, and a performance at Radio France in Paris, France, is scheduled for February 9, 2023. 風, 琴 (Wind, Instrument) Since ancient times, the Chinese character ‘琴’ (Geum), meaning instrument, has been used in the names of traditional instruments. The saehwang and the organ are instruments with similar sound-producing principles, both utilizing wind. To capture this meaning, the title ‘風, 琴’ was given. The planning for this album began with the concert ‘Pipe’ (Kyungdong Church), created in 2018 in collaboration with the composers' group ‘Music Today.’ In addition to ‘Rococo Sinawi’ composed by Choi Myung-hoon and ‘The Lonely One of Autumn’ composed by Lee Hong-seok—both of which premiered at the saehwang and organ duo concert ‘Pipe’—the album includes ‘Saeya Saeya Parang Saeya’ composed by Moon Sung-hee, a variation of the traditional folk song "Saeya Saeya," and the children's song ‘Island Baby.’ The saehwang and organ are similar yet different instruments that represent the cultures and religions of the East and West, respectively. Through the harmonious tones of these two instruments and pieces containing Korean sentiment, I hope to find a new harmony and convey a nostalgia that transcends the East, the West, and time. Kim Hyo-young_Saehwang As a representative saehwang player in Korea, she has brought renewed attention to the mysterious traditional instrument, the ‘saehwang,’ through restoration and creative activities today. Kim Hyo-young is highly regarded not only as an outstanding performer but also as a composer who continuously creates saehwang music and as a musician who pursues new music not limited to traditional music through bold attempts and integration with other instruments and fields. She received the Emerging Female Culture and Arts Award hosted by the Seoul Shinmun in 2013 and the Grand Prize in the wind instrument category at the 2015 KBS Gugak Awards. In 2014, she was selected for the Cité Internationale des Arts residency in France, beginning her activities in Europe, and was invited for two consecutive years to the opening performances of the Korean Music Festival held in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2016 and 2017. Her solo recital ‘Dreaming of a Living Isang,’ which reinterpreted the works of Isang Yun in May 2017, was invited to the reopening performance of the Isang Yun Memorial Hall in November 2017. His discography includes Kim Hyo-young's saenghwang albums *Rebirth* (2009, Pony Canyon Korea), *Hyangga* (2011, Sony Music Korea), the third rebirth *流* (2021, Sound Republica), and the single *When the Wind Comes* (2021, Sound Republica). He currently teaches the saenghwang as a visiting professor at the Sookmyung Women's University graduate school. Shin Dong-il_Organ Organist Shin Dong-il has been introduced in the media as "one of the best next-generation organists" (Echo Republicain, France), "a young musician to watch" (La Marseillaise, France), "astonishing technique, sensitivity, and talent" (ABC, Spain), "lovely and natural flexibility, confident expressiveness" (Dallas Morning News, USA), "the best classical concert of 2011" (Star Telegram, USA), and "pleasant organ sound, a firm sense of direction, and restraint from meaningless display" (The Straits Times, Singapore). He has won several international organ competitions, including the Grand Prix at the 20th Grand Prix de Chartres International Competition. He has been performing worldwide upon invitation, including Europe, North and South America, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. Shin Dong-il debuted at the age of 11, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the late Park Jong-hyuk. After meeting Professor Cho Sun-woo, he began playing the organ at age 13, and later entered the Department of Church Music at Yonsei University, where he studied under Professor Kwak Dong-soon. He studied under Jean Boyer, Olivier Latry, and Marie Claire Alain at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. He currently serves as a professor in the Department of Church Music at Yonsei University and as the organist for Yonsei University Church.
