- Jazz bassist 'Okcheon' releases 4th full-length album 飛上 (Flight)
- The concluding follow-up album to the 3rd album [Changcheon]
- The most Korean, delicate, and deep jazz sound
Jazz bassist and producer `Okcheon` is releasing his fourth full-length album [飛上 (Flight)]. Having debuted in 2015 with [Koreatown] and entering the Korean jazz scene in 2016 with his first full-length album [Thank You], `Okcheon` has been delivering high-quality jazz music through three full-length albums and numerous singles and mini-albums. The clear theme of this 4th album, [Flight], is exactly as the dictionary definition suggests: `flying high`. While the previous 3rd album [蒼天 (Changcheon)] used the blue sky as a metaphor to express the world we live in, starting from `life` and moving toward `gratitude`, this album [Flight] serves as the conclusion to that series, carrying the meaning of becoming a blue dragon and soaring high into the blue sky. Starting hopefully with the first track `In Beautiful Days`, the 4th album [Flight] contains melodies that tell us that although there are past days that were sometimes dark and painful, like the tracks `Sorrow` and `Heartbreak`, our lives will always rise again and fly high toward the light, as heard in the tracks `Moon Dance` and `Morning`.
01. In Beautiful Days
- As the start of the album, it speaks of beauty through the theme of 'hope,' just as the title suggests. It is a track that delivers Korean jazz in a comfortable and bright atmosphere that is most characteristic of `Okcheon`. Stable and restrained bass playing harmonizes with Andy Kim's piano and Choi Yo-seop's drums under the keyword of hope. Just as different instruments harmonize to become one beautiful piece, this is a song with a comfortable melody full of warm and empathetic perspectives, suggesting that only faith and harmony—the ability to embrace and empathize with one another—can overcome these chaotic times.
02. Sorrow
- Sorrow (哀愁) refers to `a sad anxiety that makes the heart mournful`. Composed of only piano and bass, `Sorrow` is a piece created to heal those of us living in the present amidst rapid change and confusion. In a world filled with resentment and hatred that feels as though it could burst at any moment, it asks, "Is it okay for the world my child will live in to flow in this direction?" Despite its long running time of 13 minutes, it possesses a powerful charm that allows the listener to focus entirely on the song through a delicate yet solemn sound and strong musical attraction.
03. Heartbreak
- `Heartbreak` is a song for those who leave, but specifically for those we must remember; it was created to commemorate those who left our side without warning. It contains a sincere desire to soothe the heartbreaking events that have occurred in our society and the grief that is difficult to bear. Starting with an impressive, heavy piano melody and proceeding into the bass performance, the song enters our hearts quietly and delivers a deep resonance. We will remember those who have gone forever and wait for a better world. I hope this remains as a melody of quiet consolation for all of us living while sharing the sorrows of the same era.
04. Moon Dance
- The version included in the 1st full-length album [Thank You] released in 2016 has been remastered for 2024. With the theme of the lush Jeju Island and the night sea, it is a track where one can enjoy a comfortable melody and the fantastic performance of bass, piano, and drums. It contains beautiful melodies that feel like a gentle breeze blowing, alongside the free improvisation inherent to jazz. In particular, the bass solo appearing in the middle is the highlight of the song, and the remastering—reborn with high-level sound and balance—is a point to listen to closely.
05.
Morning
- First included in the 2015 mini-album [Koreatown], `Morning` is the most cheerful and fast-tempo track on this album, and has been remastered and included here along with `Moon Dance`. It allows listeners to feel the inherent swing of jazz with a brisk pace resembling the feeling of morning; this song also offers a harmonious spectrum of emotions through the brilliant performances of the bass, piano, and drums. In the latter half of this album [飛上], let us let go of all the difficult and painful memories along with `Morning` and feel as if we are soaring high, becoming one with the genre of jazz. Okcheon's 4th album [飛上] is structured to begin with hope, pass through sorrow and grief, and conclude with a cheerful feeling of flying through the sky on the wind. It confirms his seasoned, stable bass playing and his structured side as a producer; although every track is an instrumental, the music contains a deep resonance and beautiful melodies that are felt even without lyrics. His album still adheres to the original one-take method of jazz overall. Armed with a jazz sound that captures the most Korean sentiments and emotions, Okcheon's 4th full-length album [飛上] is a work where one can glimpse both his warm perspective on the world and his evolved musical efforts. We hope that the seed of hope, which he poured all his strength into embedding in the music, spreads widely across the world so that all listeners can share a moment of flying high in the blue sky. - Release of Jazz Bassist 'Okcheon's 4th Full-Length Album 飛上 (Bisang)
