Debut song 'Given-Taken' contains the worries and ambitious aspirations of boys heading toward a new world.
ENHYPEN will release their debut album 'BORDER : DAY ONE' on November 30. A seismic shift in the music industry is being felt with the appearance of an 'all-time rookie' unlike any seen before in K-pop history. ENHYPEN is a boy group consisting of seven multinational members—Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki—under BELIFT LAB, a joint venture between CJ ENM and Big Hit Entertainment. They are the final surviving members of Mnet's global idol project 'I-LAND,' which aired for about three months starting last June, and they demonstrated growth both individually and as a team through numerous missions based on their infinite potential. As of its end date, 'I-LAND' created remarkable records, including 43 million cumulative online live viewers, 186 million digital clip views, and voting participation from 181 countries and regions, early on suggesting the emergence of a true 'global fan-made group.'
As the hyphen symbol suggests, the team name 'ENHYPEN' means that seven boys who have lived different lives in different environments are 'connected,' 'discover' one another, and 'grow' together. It also contains the ambition to connect people to people and world to world through music. Having ended their long journey and standing on the new border of debut, the seven boys have boldly thrown down the gauntlet toward the 'throne.' Armed with powerful performances and music that forms a bond of empathy by containing the stories of the contemporary era, they herald the birth of the 'rookie the whole world will pay most attention to in 2020.'
The story of boys on the border, 'BORDER : DAY ONE'
Through 'BORDER : DAY ONE,' ENHYPEN tells the story of boys standing on a border. The seven boys, who survived 'I-LAND'—a space of competition, harmony, and growth—and are now facing their debut, begin the prelude to a long journey while watching the rising sun on their first day in a new world. From trainees who ran after seeing potential to a rookie idol group that achieved their dreams, and from the existence of individuals who were all scattered to a single team, the boys, who have begun to take a step at the border dividing the past and future realms, simultaneously feel the joy of survival and anxiety about the unknown future.
The stories and complex emotions encountered in the process of the boys standing on the unknown border connecting, discovering, and growing together, as well as their strong will to overcome them, are expressed through two visual concepts: 'DAWN' and 'DUSK,' placed on the border between day and night. This album consists of six songs with various themes, starting with 'Intro : Walk the Line,' which sings of the feeling of pain turning into joy at the point where the surviving boys enter the world they dreamed of; the title track 'Given-Taken'; 'Let Me In (20 CUBE),' which contains a longing for the space of a loved one and a new world of admiration; '10 Months,' which compares the fluttering yet clumsy moments of love to a 10-month-old puppy; 'Flicker,' which sends a signal to the other person and connects their worlds together; and 'Outro : Cross the Line,' which marks the end of the first day and creates anticipation for ENHYPEN's next step across the line.
‘Given or Taken’—the title track ‘Given-Taken’ contains the boys' worries and strong ambitions.
The title track of the debut album, ‘Given-Taken,’ is a song in the Pop Hip hop genre. It captures the complex emotions felt by the seven members who, after a long journey, secured their survival and formed a team under the name ENHYPEN at a new starting point. Through the dark yet powerful energy of ‘Given-Taken,’ they express deep contemplation over whether the realization of their dream—a glamorous debut—was given to them or taken by their own efforts, along with the ambitious aspiration to ‘now flip the world and step onto the sky.’ The contrasting emotions of the members—feeling happy about the spotlight pouring in upon their debut, while simultaneously feeling anxiety about a new world and a desperate longing for survival—are unfolded through the strong drum and bass sounds of the chorus, which contrast with the delicate melody of the verse. Furthermore, the energetic performance, which captures the process of connecting, discovering, and growing together, along with ambitious aspirations toward a new world, catches the eye. Starting with choreography that symbolizes waking up to the world on their first day, it is followed by a synchronized dance in slow motion depicting ENHYPEN as a single giant engine starting up, and finally, it leads to the image of firing an arrow toward the world and taking a great step as if to soar immediately. The powerful, flawless synchronized dance, combined with delicate and restrained movements and expressions, expresses the complex emotions of the boys standing on the boundary.
Different from the start! The most anticipated rookies in K-pop history, ENHYPEN.
ENHYPEN is the first boy group presented by BELIFT LAB. Based on the capabilities and diverse charms of the seven members proven through Mnet’s ‘I-LAND,’ as well as the solid teamwork built through numerous missions, they have received passionate interest from fans worldwide even before their debut. The music was created with the participation of Big Hit's super-producer team, including Wonderkid, producer Bang Si-hyuk ("hitman" bang), and FRANTS. Led by the title track in the Pop Hip hop genre, where dark yet powerful energy can be felt, they interpreted various genres such as Alternative Hip hop, Reggae, Pop, and Pop R&B in ENHYPEN's own style. As they officially entered the debut countdown, ENHYPEN drew the attention of global fans with various content, including a debut trailer, concept mood boards, concept photos, and an intro lyric video. The first two trailer videos released, ‘Choose-Chosen’ and ‘Dusk-Dawn,’ were composed of cinematic visuals and a story that piqued curiosity. In the first trailer, images of roses, candles, and the moon intersected with antonyms such as ‘Trainee-Artist,’ ‘Failure-Success,’ ‘Given-Taken,’ ‘Blood-Light,’ ‘Us-the Others,’ and ‘Mortal-Immortal,’ after which ENHYPEN appeared in a forest at dawn. The second trailer captured the seven members, who had been scattered in a static state, finally gathering in one place to form a complete whole while gazing at the dawning morning sky. The two versions of concept photos captured the boys' longing for the ‘throne’ and their flight toward a new world while standing on the boundary. The members' visuals combined with classic mood outfits created an overwhelming atmosphere and showcased a youthful beauty longing for freedom.
The music video for the title track ‘Given-Taken’ captures the eye with sensory yet intense visuals. It depicts ENHYPEN, now a single team, running toward a tower of light at the edge of a desert to find their identity, adding dramatic tension through the intersection of the members' delicate emotional acting and energetic performances. The overwhelming scale of the backgrounds, including the desert tower, and the styling that changes diversely accordingly provide a rich visual experience. Based on the charm and capabilities of the members proven through ‘I-LAND,’ Big Hit Entertainment's artist producing know-how—having consecutively produced ‘Rookie of the Year’ winners in their debut years such as BTS and TOMORROW X TOGETHER—and a global fandom that built millions of followers each on major social media platforms even before their debut, ENHYPEN heralds the birth of the ‘most anticipated rookie in K-pop history,’ starting on a different level.
