ONF will release the title track ‘Popping’ from their summer popup album, SUMMER POPUP ALBUM, on August 9th. ONF returns with a special summer popup album that adds a spoonful of emotion to carbonated drink-like energy and freshness this summer. Having broken their own records and pioneered their own new genre with a unique identity—earning the nickname 'masterpiece restaurant' through their first full-length album [ONF: MY NAME] and the repackage album [CITY OF ONF]—ONF returns this time with a summer album to take charge of our summer. In their own city where they once shouted for ‘youth and freedom,’ they now deliver a message that feels as if a brilliant summer is about to pour over us, through ONF's unique perspective of saying, ‘Even if the ice age returns, we are always together.’
This summer popup album is filled with tracks of various genres expressing different summer stories, colored by the six distinct voices and colors of the six members of ONF, allowing listeners to experience various feelings of summer. The title track ‘Popping’ is a K-pop reinterpretation of the Funky Disco genre, expressing the refreshing summer of ‘you and I who have fallen head over heels for summer.’ This song, which showcases ONF's cool, carbonated-drink-like voices and energy, is expected to become a steady summer song that people think of every year when summer arrives.
In addition, the album features tracks that interpret summer emotions in various ways and draw attention with delicate stories that make one look forward to ONF's next steps: ‘Summer Poem,’ a Bossa Nova rhythm track with the theme of ‘a poem of our youth written by you and me’; ‘Summer Shape,’ written with the theme that the shape of summer encountered by each person is different; ‘Dry Ice,’ born from a special collaboration with the composing team 13, famous for their work with numerous K-pop artists such as JO1, IZ*ONE, and Taemin; and ‘Summer End,’ a City Pop genre track containing the lingering regret felt at the end of summer and the heart preparing for what comes next.
Let's fall ‘head over heels for summer’ presented by ONF, who create high completion and their own storytelling in every album with a story containing ONF's own identity during the sweltering summer!
01. Popping
Composed by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree)
Lyrics by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), WYATT (ONF)
Arranged by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree)
A reinterpretation of the Funky Disco genre into K-pop, ‘Popping’ is a dance song with the theme of ‘you and I who have fallen head over heels for summer.’
The members' refreshing voices, like a carbonated drink in midsummer, blend with the flute in the drop part to deliver a crisp summer sound. The shift in atmosphere when the intro melody, featuring choral singing over a simple piano accompaniment, repeats in the latter half is also a key point that drives the song's narrative.
02. Summer Poem
Composed by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), MK (ONF)
Lyrics by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), WYATT (ONF)
Arranged by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree)
"Summer Poem," which sings of the moment of confession while strolling through a city on a summer night, is a track that keeps the Bossa Nova rhythm intact while reconstructing it with modern instruments. It presents Bossa Nova—which originally means "new wave"—with a sound that is one step newer.
03. Summer Shape
Composed by Son Go-eun (MonoTree)
Lyrics by Son Go-eun (MonoTree)
Arranged by Hwang Hyun, Jun_P (MonoTree)
Written with the theme, "Just as everyone's heart has a different shape, wouldn't the shape of the summer we encounter also be diverse?" "Summer Shape" strove to clearly capture each member's voice without a chorus. To create a color different from typical ballad songs, Spring Reverb was used on the vocals, and the basic instrumentation was composed as a jazz trio. The participation of pianist Jun_P further enhanced the song's completeness.
04. Summer Temperature (Dry Ice)
Composed by SCORE (13), Megatone (13), Inner Child, Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), MK (ONF)
Lyrics by GDLO (MonoTree), WYATT (ONF), Inner Child (MonoTree)
Arranged by SCORE (13), Megatone (13)
Much like the contrasting track atmosphere between the rushing drop part and the relaxed reggae part, "dry ice"—which makes its surroundings cold but is hot to the touch—was used as the subject. The song's structure, which ends with a Coda as if there is a hidden subsequent story after the second verse rather than a three-verse structure, differs from conventional pop music grammar. The collaboration with composing team 13, famous for their work with numerous K-pop artists such as JO1, IZ*ONE, and Taemin, created a synergy that made ONF shine even more.
05. Summer End
Composed by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree)
Lyrics by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), WYATT (ONF)
Arranged by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree)
This is a city-pop style song that captures the feeling of regret felt at the end of summer and the mindset of calmly preparing for what comes next. The message—hoping that our trajectory exists in that unfamiliar future when we meet the next summer—is delivered through the members' emotional vocals.
