[Love and Friendship Flashing Like a Kaleidoscope]
There are times when one's past life flashes before their eyes like a kaleidoscope. A panorama of life that unfolds when one finds the leisure to look back, or when facing a decisive moment... Those moments when the past unfolds like a highlight reel often become turning points in life. Kim Ho-joong chose "Panorama" as the title for his second classical album. It is a lingering image of love and friendship flashing by like a kaleidoscope. To Kim Ho-joong—who had the small luxury of reflecting on himself during his military service, who now faces the decisive moment of standing before his fans once again, and who has lived a more dramatic life than anyone—the imagery of a "panorama" holds a deeper meaning than for anyone else at any other time.
The concept of this album is Kim Ho-joong's greeting to the lovers, friends, and fans situated within the kaleidoscope of his life. The question and answer, "Are you doing well? I am doing well too," unfold widely across the two discs like a panorama. While based on classical music, the musical styles contained in the album are diverse and broad in spectrum. From authentic vocal pieces with a strong Italian feel, to crossover ballads that trot fans can enjoy without hesitation, trot duets, and Latin music suited for summer, it is a rich album rarely seen lately.
Just as memories of love and friendship exist for everyone, memories that evoke empathy are contained within Kim Ho-joong's panorama. Though it surges wildly and grandly, the solitude and sorrow felt from the depths are no different from our own. This is likely why so many people are enthusiastic about Kim Ho-joong's music. He has a more dramatic and special life than anyone, yet his voice, which contains that life, is underpinned by a universal emotion that embraces the lives of the public. This is why he can breathe together with so many people in the popular music scene despite having achieved complete success as an opera singer.
Fitting for the title "Panorama," the entire album flows as if watching a movie starring Kim Ho-joong. The instrumental piece "En Aranjuez con tu amor," positioned as the intro, contributes to announcing the start of the cinematic album. The title tracks of the album are "Kaleidoscope" (Jumadeung) and "Promise." "Kaleidoscope" is a song that aligns with the overall concept of the album, and Kim Ho-joong's tender and soft tone is impressive. It is notable that while it contains the strengths of opera, trot, and pop, it was completed as a song unique to him, rendering the genre irrelevant.
The double title track "Promise" featured pianist Yiruma as the composer. It is a song where Yiruma's characteristic delicacy and lyricism stand out, and Kim Ho-joong's understated emotion touches the heart. The name Choi Baek-ho also catches the eye. Choi Baek-ho, who joined for the duet "Sing Along," readily accepted the proposal, and the song was completed not as a collaboration between a senior and junior, but as a feeling of friendship that transcends generations. It is a song that perfectly fits the planning intention of creating an album that both the listener and the singer can enjoy and empathize with.
"Friend" is also a song likely to receive much love. Unlike "Kaleidoscope," it fully captures the charm of a crossover singer with his characteristic mid-to-low range. In the crossover-style "Season of Longing," he handles a comfortable, easy-listening retro style. The climax, which explodes by adding the sorrowful singing style of trot, is captivating. "Autumn Flower" is an art song personally selected by Kim Ho-joong, highlighting his aspect as an opera singer. With a cello base, it adds a heavier emotion than other songs, leading the listener to a deeper place.
The cover songs positioned throughout the album are both popular and unique. The selections are easy to listen to without being predictable. In "Il Mare Calmo Della Sera," "Champagne," "Brucia La Terra," and "Adoro," he lets his emotions explode, while in the opera number "Tiritomba" and the Latin number "Oye Como Va," he lets his excitement explode.
In the jazz-influenced ‘Love in Portofino,’ one can get intoxicated by the undulating atmosphere, while ‘O Tannenbaum’ is pious and pure. For the outro track ‘Butterfly,’ completed with piano and harmonica, Kim Ho-joong's own description of the song was provided: “A small caterpillar dreams. After a long winter of trials and pain, it soars as a butterfly. And it sings to the wide world. The lonely piano and harmonica playing in the first half represents the time of trial, and eventually, together with beautiful humming, it soars as a butterfly.”
The message he embedded in ‘Butterfly’ is impressive. A small caterpillar that dreams, and a butterfly that soars beautifully after passing through a time of trial. An album completed at a decisive moment in life where life flashes by like a kaleidoscope. How will his panorama unfold at the next turning point when he looks back on his life? It begins again from now. (Written by Lee Yong-ji, Popular Music Critic)
